It should be noted that the potential buyers of the new Atlas NHRR DERS-2c units being offered should be aware of a few facts. While it was gone over in detail in Vol.17 issue 4 on the rebuild units from Alco some may not have access to that issue.

There were three (3) very distinct types of rebuilds which we classed as Type(s) I, II, III. (Not a RR classification).

The units offered tentatively have road numbers of 529 and 559. So here are the distinctive differences and you can point them out to fellow Fans/Modelers after this little tutorial if you so choose.

Here is 529 in all her recently returned glory photographed on a drizzly day at Newtown Ct. by Peter MacLachlan. Note the following this is a type I rebuild done in May/June 1959 it retains the Steam generator. All the appliances including the brake wheel are 409 Red Orange The Turbo stack is also body color not Aluminum (That came later). It has and always retained the Golden glow single incandescent bulb Headlight in its New Haven days (What happened to it later is someone elses concern). Since some one may say it Might be different on one end I show both ends on the SAME DAY coming and going to put that to rest. Since this unit was part of the Phase 1b style unit (517-536) there was no end walk way drop plate and apply release hoses are not duplexed. However the MU receptacles were duplexed in the rebuilding. It also retains its as delivered (1950)diaphragm buffer over the coupler. The hoses on the apron show the modification of the 26L brake system. Also the PRIME pop up cab vent is not installed which proves that was a NHRR application.The Road numbers of the type I rebuilds were 518, 526, 529, 549 and 553 Rebuilt May/June 1959.

Now here is unit #559 a TYPE II rebuild,the steam generator was also retained.The only major rebuild difference here is the PYLE national dual sealed beam headlight. The end walkway drop step and duplexed apply release hoses/MU receptacles were already on it as delivered in 1950 as was the inter cooler for the oil which is below the walkway ahead of the main reservoir.

TYPE II rebuilds were 533, 551,and 559 Rebuilt October 1959. These are the smallest number of and the rarest type of rebuilds.

Does this mean we should ask Atlas to change the number of 529 to a later rebuild? Atlas was amendable to change the RS-1 numbers when they found out that the numbers they picked did not have the full balloon scheme.

Secondly, are the Type III rebuilds closer to the Atlas model? If they are, they perhaps they should change the number of 559 to something else, too (provided the Type III did not have a steam gen.).
