"Hi, my name is Kristin and I am writing this on behalf of Kelsi Nelson - not as a related family member but as someone who can speak objectively and honestly!

I met Kelsi through my boyfriend, Erik. Kelsi is Erik's niece. Kelsi is an amazing 21 year old girl. She is almost 23 years younger than me but her strength and motivation has provided me an ageless example of grace that continues to remind me to be thankful for what I do have, rather than be bitter about what I don’t .

Kelsi won't be happy about me telling her story but it's important to know it to understand why she is so deserving of a proper instrument that will allow her to continue her passion in music. Upon meeting Kelsi I have always had an intuitive feeling watching her that music is what has allowed her to survive and thrive through many times of pain and disappointment. Music is her therapy.

Kelsi lost her father, Fred, from a tragic and very sad disease when she was only 10. Erik still talks about how the happy little girl changed that day. Having a 10-year-old daughter myself, I can't imagine watching that kind of pain in a child's eyes. It makes my heart hurt. Kelsi's mother, Shannon (Erik's sister), was now alone to take care of Kelsi. Kelsi was left with a single Mom struggling to find her own path. The following years were filled with relationship struggles, many moves, financial instability and an always-lurking fear of losing what she had left, the rock in her life, Mom-Shannon. Kelsi excelled academically and poured herself into her natural talent and interest in the French Horn. She closed her bedroom door, got her homework done and would play her horn for hours.  If you have older kids you understand how hard it is sometimes to get kids to practice anything other than texting or video games.

On July 23, 2013, Kelsi lost the rock in her life, her beautiful mother Shannon. and Erik lost his sister to a similar sickness that had taken her father less than 10 years ago right after her 10th birthday. The last few years of Shannon's life had many ups and downs. lots of sadness as Kelsi watched her brother, James (Kelsi has a younger brother who is now 8) get taken away from Shannon as she struggled through a disease that could and would only continue to make her sicker with the loss of her son.  As all of these things are going on, Kelsi, completely on her own, managed to graduate from High School, get into the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music with multiple scholarships, and continue to thrive and grow while losing nearly everything she had ever known.

Kelsi has a job at the police department on campus at UCLA. She works typically 20-25 hours a week during the school year on top of her music classes and ensembles that she regularly performs with. She is auditioning for two orchestras outside of UCLA in the next month that will give her more opportunities to perform. Her music is her life. Through her music she finds the peace that gives her strength.

She has been working hard and has already put down a $500 deposit on the horn and has until August 30th to get the money to purchase it or will lose her deposit! The model of the horn is the AG2K, or the Atkinson Geyer 2000.   It's a 12-year-old used horn and perfect for Kelsi's playing. She currently doesn't have her own horn and has been using a UCLA school horn. This horn will help her through UCLA placement auditions, AYS and Debut Orchestra auditions, and graduate school auditions (which are coming up in the next 5 months!) including but not limited to USC, Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University, New England Conservatory, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

It is important to hear Kelsi's story so you understand why anything you can contribute will not only help financially towards getting her a horn but will show a young girl that there are people that really do care about others and that it is possible to rise above adversity and use it to propel you into a life of happiness.

Many of you have asked how you can help in Kelsi's future as she was left with nothing when her mother passed away. Now is your chance to contribute even a small amount!
