is the largest national park in the terai region, covering an area of 968 sq.km. The park situated in Nepal’s western terai, was established for the conservation of tigers and their prey species. Initially, a wildlife reserve, it was expanded and gazetted a National Park in 1988. In 1997, an area of 327 km2 surrounding the park was declared a buffer zone, which consists of forests and private lands, and is managed by the park authorities and local communities. Karnali Lodge was opened in 1988 in support of the park’s development through tourism.
he Babai valley, a core element of Bardia National Park, extending from Parewaodar to Chepang (bridge) was included in the park in 1984. The pristine valley is characterized by rich biodiversity, the major vegetation and forest type being wooded grassland and riverine forest. Some rhinoceros from Chitwan were relocated to this valley, but suffered during the Maoist insurgency due to reduced protection. The Babai valley with its tigers, rhinos, wild elephants and a host of other species is a very special place for exploring and wildlife sighting. The park authorities have just permitted tourist access to this area and Karnali Lodge will be organizing special trips to this region from the coming season.
