TV2’s popular and long-running children’s show What Now will announce live on Sunday morning the lucky lady chosen to ‘Step Into Serena’s Shoes’.
When outgoing presenter Serena Rongonui announced her decision to leave, hundreds of people from around New Zealand applied for the role. After a successful search, the What Now production team are happy to announce that Gemma Knight (Gem) will be joining Charlie Panapa as studio co-host each Sunday.
Last week, viewers saw the final three contenders, Gem, Cassie, and Gracie, braving wintry conditions in Akaroa, in a series of challenges deliberately picked to test the potential presenters’ hosting capabilities.
What Now’s executive producer Janine Morrell-Gunn says the decision was far from easy, and the team were spoilt for choice.
“Every episode of What Now is different, and Gem showed that she is more than capable of taking on new challenges, all with a grounded poise and beautiful smile,” Morrell-Gunn says.
Gem’s new presenting role caps off an inspiring array of achievements for the 18-year-old. A former student of Burnside High School, Gemma graduated with NCEA excellence, is a talented saxophonist, and winner of the Russell McVeagh Law Scholarship for 2009. Her many talents extend to making a great ice-cream sundae, as her friendly face is part of Wendy’s ice cream store in her local mall.
But she may have to put the ice-cream and law career on hold after successfully stomaching an unsavoury blend of French cuisine, gracefully tackling an obstacle course, and diving into a polar plunge last weekend.
Gem has proven herself popular in the weekly online votes cast by What Now’s audience, and this Sunday viewers can see the moment Gem had the good news broken to her by co-host Charlie, who surprised her at work disguised as an old man.
