Friends of Sabeel—North America (FOSNA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt Christian ecumenical organization seeking justice and peace in the Holy Land through nonviolence and education. Read about our Leadership Team

FOSNA promotes awareness and understanding of the conflict between Palestinians and the State of Israel by fostering relationships between Northern American Christians and the indigenous Palestinians in the Holy Land.

FOSNA seeks reconciliation between peoples in the Holy land, emphasizing the need for a just peace and the end of U.S. support for Israel’s military occupation.

FOSNA works in the U.S. and Canada to support the vision of Sabeel. cultivating the support of American churches through co-sponsored regional conferences, alternative pilgrimage, witness trips and international gatherings in the Holy Land.

Sabeel is an international peace movement initiated by Palestinian Christians, who seek a just peace as defined by international law and existing United Nations resolutions.

  • Sabeel promotes theological, moral and legal principles for peace as outlined in the Kairos Palestine document.
  • Sabeel is a grassroots movement striving to develop a spirituality based on justice, peace, nonviolence, liberation and reconciliation.
  • Sabeel also works to promote a more accurate awareness of the heritage and witness of Palestinian Christians.

Where did Sabeel come from? The movement grew out of a struggle to interpret scripture in light of the Palestinian experience under occupation. As local Christians studied together, they forged a Palestinian version of liberation theology, which upholds the Gospel call for freedom from political, social and economic oppression.

The Rev. Naim Stifan Ateek, an Anglican pastor and indigenous Palestinian, worked with other Christian and Jewish theologians, clergy and lay people to create an organization supporting this movement. In 1993 they agreed to call it Sabeel, drawing on an Arabic word, which means “the way” but can also signify a “spring” or “channel” of living water.

Sabeel today has two offices, in East Jerusalem and in Nazareth. It strives for a spirituality based on justice, peace, nonviolence, liberation and reconciliation, and it promotes a more accurate awareness of Palestinian Christians.

Friends of Sabeel-North America is one of several international chapters supporting the work of Sabeel. Other chapters are found in Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Canada.
