Star Trek 24/7: LCARS 24 is a general-purpose 32-bit, DOS-bootable alternative GUI with many bundled programs, reverse-engineered from the 24th-century Starfleet system. There are many games, simulations, a reference library, and utility programs (word processing, file manager, calculator, unit conversion, viewers, players, servers, etc.). There is a scrolling world map and a time-zone map with little clocks that directly show the current time everywhere in the world. Users can select various color schemes and other options to customize the system. An interactive 3-D animation shows a speed-up of planets orbiting the sun. A unique feature of the chess apps is a pair of halos to point out the computer's last move, in case you missed it.

The standby screen is a full-screen digital clock with musical or talking alarm and calendar, and pressing the space bar turns the whole screen into an emergency light. For Star Trek fans, that main screen itself is a joy to have, since it puts a one square foot of the 24th century, which we may never see again, in a room in one's home. And it makes a nice bedroom night-light (if you like 24th-century Star Trek).

It has its own LCARS programs, which start up instantly and have uncanny speed and power-to-weight ratio, because the LCARS core does most of the work. You can also launch legacy DOS programs from the LCARS 24 program launcher, in which case LCARS 24 generates a title screen for the DOS program, shuts itself down, lets the DOS program run, then quickly reloads and bounces right back, without the intro movie clip and other startup fanfare. Bundled DOS programs include Pacman, Ms. Pacman, Tetris, an interesting interactive 2-D map clarifying the current positions of the planets, and a scrolling 3-D planetarium.

The LCARS 24 library packs a lot of punch for its file size, because graphical screens are rendered in response to plain-text scripts written in an LCARS-dedicated markup language called SFML, which also makes those displays user-editable in an intuitive scripting language, and the editor has a one-touch preview toggle to make editing fast and easy.

Version 4.0.4 has three new bundled LCARS apps: Sudoku, Kakuro, and an LCARS PowerPoint clone called Briefing, as well as 19 Starfleet MSDs, 17 of which are new or redrawn, plus a few NASA MSDs. SFML has been expanded, and there are many tweaks in the GUI and its programs over version 4.0.3. Correct user input produces LCARS panel beeps when appropriate, and incorrect input results in verbal scolding in voices familiar to Star Trek fans.

The main limiting factor for most people who want LCARS 24 is that it requires its own computer, which should be a late-1990s laptop, one that came with Windows 95 or 98. It should have a standard graphics card and sound card. To be useful as a full-time household clock in Standby mode, it has to be a computer that doesn't have forced power save, meaning that the screen doesn't automatically shut off after a while. It's not necessary to remove Windows. Just start up in Pure DOS mode to bypass Windows (press F8 at start up then type 5). If the computer has no OS, FreeDOS (free from SourceForge will do). Otherwise use MS-DOS. So it does also require some knowledge of DOS, as well.

LCARS 24, like Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD, is a DPMI program. The difference is that it that masquerades as a DOS program and uses the DOS (FAT32) filesystem. Therefore, it can be booted from DOS, which means it starts up quickly, and you can shut it down and use DOS as the need arises or smoothly launch DOS programs from its LCARS program launcher.

LCARS 24 is a product of years of development and refinement and is constantly growing. It’s programmed in C, with DJGPP.
