Description: Brokers of Fine Collector Automobiles and Vintage Race Cars
Introduced in 1960, the Series II 250GT Pinin Farina represented Ferrari’s increasing tendency towards production road cars, both to showcase the technology tested in racing, and to provide income to support racing. The cars were elegant, understated, and luxurious, and were available as both open and closed variants. Fitted with the venerable 3-litre V-12, the 250 GT is in many ways the quintessential classic Ferrari, and with generous space for both passengers and luggage, PF’s have always been excellent touring cars.
This particular car is a matching numbers, disc brake overdrive example that was delivered new to the President of Mexico at the time, Mr. Adolfo Lopez Mateos. It was trimmed in the current gray leather, and painted in its stunning blue sera. Mr Adolfo Lopez Mateos kept and cherished this fantastic early 250 Series Ferrari until finally selling it to his fellow countryman and Ferrari enthusiast Mr. Francisco Diez Barroso Castaneda in late 1966. Original delivery documentation, as well as subsequent bills of sale on file confirms this.
Today, s/n 1721GT is best described as an exceedingly straight, solid, and complete driver example, which stresses originality. The odometer currently shows 69,000 kms, which judging from the lightly patina-ed interior, could very well be correct from new. The body is straight and solid, with consistent panel match and gaps throughout. The car was most certainly repainted in its original blue sera. The repaint is in keeping with good “driver” standards, and would be acceptable for tours and rally events, but perhaps not concours showing. The chrome is straight and complete throughout, showing minor age and wear. The car retains its original Marchal headlamps, and the correct aluminum Borrani RW3598 “Record” wheels, 5 1/2” by 400mm in size, fitted with Michelin X Series tires. The windshield and side window glass, and rear window have their original stampings, and are in good condition.
The interior is trimmed in grey leather with a beautiful patina, very likely original to the car. The headliner is also original, although the rear package tray appears to have been recovered. The gauges and switchgear are all in excellent order, with virtually no fading or weathering of any kind, as is the Becker Mexico II radio. The leather dash top is suffering some sun shrinkage and is pulling, and the carpets have been changed to an aftermarket material.
The engine bay is exceptionally nicely detailed, with restored inner fender wells, radiator, and freshly crackle painted valve covers and exhaust heat shields. This example employs the larger 40 DCE carburetors typically fitted to competition specification cars, although they may have been optioned on this car when ordered new. Many other correct details are in place, including yellow fuel lines, air cleaner housing, brake booster, heater valve, Marchel horns, and often missing window washer bag.
The underside is straight and solid, and free of major corrosion or corrosion repairs. While not overly detailed, a new Ansa exhaust system has been fitted, and the belly pans are in place, again confirming the complete and original nature of this early 250 Series car.
Recently, the respected Ferrari experts at Bob Smith Coachworks performed work to the brake and carburetion systems, and serviced the shocks. A new exhaust system was installed as well. A valve adjustment was also recently performed, with very few miles logged since.
The car runs and drives, generally performing well. The engine starts easily, and revs freely, particularly in the higher rpm ranges. When recently tested at Fantasy Junction, the compression readings were all between 130-155 lbs. While there is some light smoke common to the 250 engines, the example could be driven and enjoyed as is, before being refreshed further down the line.
Currently the car resides on a Montana State title. Included with the car is a largely complete 250 Series tool roll, and the matching spare Borrani wheel, as well as select records going back to the original delivery to Mr. Adolfo Lopez Mateos, as well as more recent records discussing the work mentioned above. A second set of keys is also included.
While understated and elegant, the PF Coupe retains the aggressive flair typical of the competition cars of the era. Ideal to casually show or drive in road rally events, and one of just 350 produced, this PF is in many ways the best value in 250 series Ferraris.
