The Infiniti J30 is a four-door luxury sedan that was introduced in 1993 and discontinued just four years later. The J30 stands out from most of the four-door sedans of its time due to its rounded flanks. However, the car's distinct shape has something of a polarizing effect on consumers, with people tending to either love or hate the J30.

Sales of the J30 remained good for a time, but the introduction of the Nissan Altima by Infiniti's parent company cast an unflattering light on the luxury brand J30. The Altima is not only $20,000 cheaper; it also has a better look. Ultimately, Infiniti decided to shutter the J30 line in 1997. The J30 survived its four-year run of production without a major redesign and was only produced for a single generation.

When the rear drive Infiniti J30 was first unveiled, its designers said that it represented deliverance from the ""tyranny of the wedge,"" referring to the wedge-shaped design that sedans commonly utilized at the time. With its distinct look, rounded flanks, and powerful V-6 engine, the J30 remained something of a head turner during its relatively short run of production. Unfortunately, not all of that attention was positive. The J30's distinct rounded contours cut into the car's trunk space. Not only that but the J30's width, or lack thereof, results in an interior that, while regarded as cozy by some, can just as easily be seen as cramped by others. While the car's V-6 engine is certainly capable, fuel economy stands at a disappointing value, offering less than 20 mpg in the city.

1997 was the final year that Infiniti produced the J30. Like the model years that preceded it, the 1997 J30 is a solid luxury car with a respectable amount of pickup. This power stems from the J30's 3.0-liter V-6 engine that, rated at 210 hp, the company originally developed for the sporty Nissan 300ZX. This engine matches with a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard safety features for the Infiniti J30 include anti-lock brakes and dual airbags.

The interior of the J30 lives up to its luxury billing with fine leather seats and upholstery. However, interior space is rather limited and it only seats four passengers comfortably. On the other hand, the J30 boasts nearly flawless interior ergonomics, attractive gauges, and a dashboard clock of exceptional quality.

While the styling of the 1997 J30 may not be for everyone, the car certainly delivers in terms of performance. Options for the 1997 J30 include a touring package that features better tires, custom alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, stiffer spring rates, four-wheel steering, and a decreased anti-roll bar diameter.

During its rather short lifespan as a production vehicle, the J30 saw relatively few changes. The car made its debut in 1993, but this model has a few problems associated with it, namely a Bose sound system that interferes with cell phones and hot air that flows intermittently from the heating and air-conditioning system.

The manufacturer recalled 1993 and 1994 models for a wiring harness cover that could potentially catch fire when the pretensioner for the seatbelt was activated. Because of these minor imperfections, it may be advisable to seek a model from 1995 or later if you are considering the J30 as a used car option.

In 1994, a few minor alterations were implemented, including the introduction of heated front seats and two extra speakers for the sound system. Like the 1993 model, the 1994 J30 contains a 3.0-liter V-6 that pairs with a four-speed automatic transmission.

1995 saw the addition of more minor changes. These include redesigned taillights, power lumbar support for the driver seat, and an antiglare mirror. In 1996, Infiniti offered three new color options. The final 1997 model of the J30 shows no changes from the previous year's model.

Infiniti introduced the J30 when it was still trying to find its way as a brand. While it may have never emerged as a market segment-defining model, the Infiniti J30 remains an extremely viable used car option for anyone looking for a reliable Japanese luxury sedan. A used J30 in reasonable condition will be a pleasure to drive, especially the touring edition. The well-built Infiniti J30 enjoys a reputation for running clean.
