The Oldsmobile Ciera, which in its earlier years many referred to as the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, uses front drive and is categorized as a midsize sedan. However, it comes in various body designs, including a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a four-door hatchback.

It underwent significant changes from 1982 to 1996 with engine sizes ranging from the smallest of 2.2-liter I4, to the rather impressive 4.3-liter V-6 in its later developments. Over that time span, the vehicle has been released with two transmissions, namely the four-speed automatic transmission and the earlier three-speed automatic transmission.

The first edition of the Oldsmobile Ciera debuted in 1982 and the final release of the Oldsmobile Ciera came in 1996. The vehicle did not survive that many years without its fair share of manufacturing drama and had recalls with several NHTSA recommendations concerning the electrical system. For instance, the 1990 and 1991 Oldsmobile Ciera power seats for the driver and front passenger are considered unsafe, and an electrical malfunction could cause a fire in the front cabin of the vehicle.

The manufacturer issued another electrical-related recall on the 1994 Oldsmobile Ciera because the door lock mountings permit a water leak that can potentially cause a short circuit and set the vehicle on fire. Brake function also caused a recall in the 1993 Oldsmobile Ciera.

The 1995 Oldsmobile Ciera comes in two trims, namely the Cutlass Ciera SL Series I sedan which contains a 2.2-liter I4, 120-hp engine that produces 140 lb-ft of torque using a three-speed automatic transmission. The other trim, the Cutlass Ciera SL Series II sedan houses a 3.1-liter V-6, 160-hp engine that pairs with a four-speed automatic transmission. The Cutlass Ciera SL Series I has an EPA-rated fuel economy of 25/32 mpg city/highway, whereas the Cutlass Ciera SL Series II gets 19/29 mpg city/highway.

The Ciera sedan offers ample interior space with 38.6 inches of headroom, 42.1 inches of legroom, 55.8 inches of shoulder room, and 50.3 inches of hip room in the front. In the rear, the vehicle provides 38.3 inches of headroom, 35.8 inches of legroom, 56 inches of shoulder room, and 54.3 of hip room making it a fairly roomy vehicle for its class. As a basic comfort feature, this model includes air-conditioning standard. Both trims offer driver and passenger airbags and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) as safety features.

The exterior of the vehicle sports the typical sedan shape of its day, though it has a box-like appearance. It boasts a 190.3 inch length, 69.5 inch width, 54.1 inch height, and sits on a 104.9 inch wheelbase.

The Oldsmobile Ciera has a fairly long history while sharing the naming platform with other vehicles that preceded it. It starts its journey first as the Cutlass, which first came onto the market in 1983 sporting sedan and wagon body types. These vehicles have either two or four doors. In 1986, the Cutlass Supreme entered the automobile showroom as a rear drive vehicle, and after several upgrades received the name 4-4-2 in the 1985 model year. The Cutlass Ciera then came on the market in 1988 to respond to a market demand for a midsize sedan vehicle, though the manufacturer also produced it in the coupe body style.

In 1986, the Oldsmobile Ciera serviced the market bearing a 3.3-liter V-6 engine. In 1988, while being sold on the larger international market, the Ciera received a revamping of its exterior appearance and donned flared panels, a rear spoiler, and better looking headlamps. The reworking of the Ciera’s appearance continued through the next years, adding other safety features like ABS.

The 1995 and 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera represents the final and closing edition of this vehicle and uses only the Ciera part of the name. As with the name loss, so come the production loss and the eventual cessation of this vehicle.
