This beautiful 1937 Packard Dual Windshield Phaeton was owned originally by Robert Taylor, the actor, who starred in many films starting in 1935.

  • Camille, 1936
  • A Yank at Oxford, 1938
  • The Crowd Roars, 1938
  • Billy the Kid, 1941
  • Conspirator, 1949. starred opposite Elizabeth Taylor
  • Quo Vadis 1951
  • Ivanhoe, 1951
  • D-Day the sixth of June, 1956
  • Hosted the TV show Death Valley Days 1966-1969

So, Robert Taylor was a really big star, the films listed are just some of his highlights.  How do we know it was Robert Taylor’s car?  The Still living second owner. Mr. Dan Harbaugh, contacted the current owner, and provided documents and photos of the car going back to 1948 when he purchased it!

Here it is on a trip to Mexico back then, a frequent diversion for the University of Arizona Students.

Here’s Dan driving his new purchase in 1948.  This photo is the “exhibit A” referred to in the following document:

Here is a photo. taken by my Dad, William S. Snyder, of this car while it was in John Tompkin’s ownership.  The photo was taken during a CCCA tour at the time.

the Ownership chain on this car is as follows – Robert Taylor, Dan Harbaugh 1948 to 1950, John Tompkins 1950 to 1972, Robert Hannaford, 1972 to 1993, and the current owner 1993 to the present.

The bodybuilder of the car is unknown.  The original theory in the hobby was that is was built by Kellner, but this now appears unlikely. We believe it was either a Murray body – as mentioned in the Turnquist Packard book, below, or possibly a Rollston body.  The body has a number of Packard Phaeton design cues, and we believe it was sold new in this configuration.  The Classic Car Club issued a letter in 1994 stating that it was a body change done in the Classic era, thus making it eligible for Full Classic Status and judging at all levels – senior, premier, emeritus.  However, that letter was issued prior to the knowledge of these 1948 photos, and I think this car has the body with which it left the factory.

The unique details – the long rear fenders, the custom built trunk, which is evident in the 1948 Photos, and the dual windshield make this a really special car!

Here is the firewall tag – the custom bodied cars used the 1507-2XX series,  this is 1507-217.

The 473 Cubic Inch V-12 is a monster!  It runs and runs.  I’ve participated in a number of tours where this car has also been, and I can honestly tell you that it runs super!  By the way, they DRIVE it to the tours, and DRIVE it home. From Desert heat to mountain peaks, this car will take anything the road can throw at it!

Here’s the right side of the mighty V-12, with freshly rebuilt water pump and other service items to keep it running the way it did in 1937!

Here’s the front seat, done in leather. As you can see from the photo, the leather is older, and shows some age.

Here’s a good example of the idea that the cosmetics are showing their age. This car is in great condition for touring, but the cosmetics are old, and a new owner might consider a cosmetic refreshing.
