This DIY repair and service manual by Haynes, covers 1979-1988 Saab 900 sedan and hatchback, with 2.0L 4-cylinder SOHC engines, including turbo and 16-valve models.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission, a 5-speed manual transmission, or a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission.

NOTE: For safety the fuel tank must always be removed in a well ventilated area, never over a pit.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative lead.
  • Remove the filler cap then siphon or pump all the fuel from the tank into a suitable container (photo). Alternatively the tank fuel outlet hose can be disconnected and on fuel injection models the pump located in the tank can be used to remove the fuel.
  • Remove the floor panel (or carpet on some 99 models) from the luggage compartment, and then remove the screws and withdraw the fuel level transmitter cover plate and where applicable the pump cover plate.
  • Disconnect the wiring from the fuel level transmitter and where applicable the pump, noting their location for correct refitting.
  • Disconnect the filler and ventilation hoses and the fuel supply and return hoses (photo). Remove the fuel line clips where applicable.
  • Remove the fuel level transmitter and fuel pump (if applicable) with reference to Sections 6 and 4.
  • If the tank is contaminated with sediment or water, swill it out with clean fluid. If the tank leaks or is damaged, it should be repaired by specialists or alternatively renewed. Do not, under any circumstances, solder or weld a fuel tank.
  • Remove the floor panel (or carpet on some 99 models) from the luggage compartment, and then remove the screws and withdraw the transmitter cover plate (photo).
  • Remove the screws or unscrew the plastic cap as applicable, and then carefully withdraw the transmitter unit from the tank. On pre-1981 models the unit incorporates a float and lever, whereas on later models the float is sealed in a plastic tube. BRAKING SYSTEM FOOTBRAKE PEDAL | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
    1. Remove the lower front panel (Chapter 12). Also remove the center console where applicable (photo).
  • Extract the split pin and remove the washer and pivot pin securing the servo pushrod or linkage to the pedal. Note on right-hand drive models the pedal shaft is extended to the left-hand side of the car.
  • On right-hand drive models remove the circlip and washer from the left-hand end of the shaft, unscrew the right-hand bracket nuts, and withdraw the pedal and shaft.
  • Installation is a reversal, but where applicable adjust the length of the servo pushrod so that the brake pedal is the same height as the clutch pedal.
